Arc Flash Gloves and the 2027 Hand Protection Changes

Your glove program just got a third job. Shock protection and arc flash were the first two — the 2027 edition adds contact thermal hazards.

01The three jobs a glove program has to do now

Hands take the majority of electrical injuries — they're what's closest to the work. Until now, glove selection under 70E answered two questions. The 2027 edition adds a third:

02What "contact thermal hazard" actually captures

This is not about the oven next to the disconnect or the steam line behind the panel. The Article 100 definition is specific: a contact thermal hazard is the heat a conductive object gives off because it's carrying current. Think overheated lugs and terminations, conductors running hot under load, bus connections, the enclosure parts of energized equipment that current has heated up. It's the electrical system itself burning skin on contact — which is why the 2027 edition treats it as an electrical hazard and requires thermal hand protection wherever that exposure is possible (130.7(C)(7)(e)).

My prediction from the training room: the hard part won't be buying gloves. It'll be the assessment — nobody has been walking electrical tasks asking "where do hands meet conductive parts that are hot because they're carrying current?" That's a new column in your job hazard analysis, not a new SKU.

03The mistakes I see in every glove audit

  • Leather protectors treated as optional. Rubber insulating gloves without protectors are damaged rubber waiting to fail — and the test date doesn't save you from a puncture that happened yesterday.
  • Expired test dates. Rubber insulating gloves get an electrical retest before they're first issued and then at least every 6 months in service; insulating blankets and sleeves are on a 12-month cycle (Table 130.7(C)(7)(b)). On top of that: inspect gloves and give them an air test before each day's use, and match the glove class to the voltage using Table 130.7(C)(7)(a). Every plant has a drawer of gloves whose stamps expired during the last administration.
  • "Arc-rated" assumed from appearance. Heavy leather is not an arc rating. If the glove doesn't have a documented rating, it doesn't have one.
  • Dexterity ignored until the field revolts. The most protective glove nobody wears is less protective than the adequate glove everyone wears. Involve the crews in selection — this is the single best predictor of a glove program that works.

04What to do before your next PPE purchase

  • Add a contact thermal exposure screen to your electrical task assessments
  • Ask suppliers for the conformity assessment method behind every arc rating — the 2027 edition makes it a PPE marking requirement in 130.7(C), and pure self-declaration is no longer an accepted path (the options are self-declaration under a registered quality management system with accredited-lab testing, or third-party certification; PPE marked before the effective date is grandfathered)
  • Reconcile your glove matrix: shock class, arc rating, and now thermal contact, by task — one chart your crews can actually use
  • Fold the new requirements into delta training — a glove requirement nobody has heard of protects no one
