Pick the equipment, pick the task, get the category — plus the four conditions that have to be true before the answer means anything.

01Read this before you touch the selector
The PPE tables in NFPA 70E are the most-used and most-misused part of the standard. They are not a shortcut around an arc flash study. They are a permitted alternative only when your equipment actually meets the parameters printed above the table — maximum available short-circuit current, maximum fault clearing time, and minimum working distance.
In the training room I put it this way: the table method assumes a breaker that clears in a specified time. If nobody has tested that breaker in fifteen years, the table is not protecting your electrician. It is describing a facility you do not have.

Task-based PPE lookup
Match on the actual equipment, not on what the drawing calls it. A “panelboard” fed at 600 V from a large service is not the same row as a 240 V lighting panel.
Diagnostics and troubleshooting on energized parts is energized work. It is not a lesser category of activity.
02The four questions the table cannot answer for you
- Is the equipment in normal operating condition? The tables assume it is. Normal operating condition has specific criteria — properly installed, properly maintained, doors closed and secured, covers in place, no evidence of impending failure. Miss any one and the table row does not apply.
- Do you know the available fault current at that point? Not at the service — at that piece of equipment. If the answer is “no,” you are guessing.
- Has the protective device been maintained and tested? The clearing time in the table is a design value, not a measurement of your breaker.
- What is the actual working distance? The table assumes a specific one. Reaching deeper into the enclosure changes the incident energy your face and chest see.
If you cannot answer all four with evidence, the honest conclusion is that you need an incident energy analysis, not a different table row.
03What the categories actually protect against
An arc flash PPE category is a burn-injury threshold, not a rating of how dangerous a task feels. The arc rating of the clothing system must be at least the incident energy at the working distance. Category clothing does nothing for shock — that is a separate assessment with separate PPE, and the two are commonly conflated.
The most consequential misunderstanding I correct in class: arc-rated clothing does not prevent an arc flash and does not protect against blast pressure, molten metal projectiles, or hearing damage. It is intended to limit burn injury to a survivable level. That is a meaningful thing to do — and a very different claim from “this makes the task safe.”
